Job Title: Director of Operations, Szarvas Camp
Reports to: JDC Hungary/EAA – Szarvas Camp Director
Location: Office, based in JDC Hungary offices (Sip str 12, Budapest) with regular visits to Szarvas Camp site

Overall purpose:
The Director of Operations will oversee the operations and business management of Szarvas Camp, JDC’s flagship program. Reporting to the Szarvas Camp Director, this role involves managing a facility that spans 7 hectares and accommodates up to 600 people. The camp, which underwent a multi-million dollar renovation three years ago, hosts youth and teen camps with four 12-day sessions each summer, welcoming up to 400 participants and 150 staff members per session. The Director of Operations will supervise various departments, ensuring that all aspects of the camp’s operations, including maintenance, food service, housekeeping, reception, and logistics, are run efficiently and align with JDC’s vision, mission, and policies
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement the Szarvas Camp purchasing policy, including negotiating and managing agreements and contracts with suppliers and vendors for technical equipment, kitchen supplies, food, cleaning materials, and program-activity materials.
- Partner with the Technical Systems Manager to establish and maintain control systems for facility management and inventory.
- Oversee the upkeep, maintenance, cleanliness, and repair of infrastructure and equipment at both the Szarvas Camp site and the Budapest office.
- Supervise and manage the facility team at the camp and the Operations Coordinator in Budapest.
- Oversee the Szarvas Camp kitchen and all food-related operations.
- Negotiate and arrange contracts for freelancers and temporary staff in collaboration with the Facility Manager.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal, and internal health and safety policies and permits.
- Develop transition plans for employees nearing retirement in coordination with the Camp Director.
- Ensure all relevant insurance policies are current and in place in coordination with JDC.
- Collaborate with the Camp Director and finance team to manage the budget effectively, while identifying opportunities to increase revenue or reduce expenses.
- Advise and support the JDC Hungary team with their general operational needs.
Key tasks:
- Supervise and/or attend key Szarvas Camp events and rentals.
- Conduct regular visits to the Szarvas Camp, including overnight stays as required.
- Be available for regular travel and occasional weekend and evening work.
- Approve invoices in the accounting system and sign certificates of completion when necessary.
- Work closely with other JDC Hungary teams and functions, including finance, security, and administration.
- Perform other tasks as required by the Camp Director and/or JDC Europe Regional management.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing or running operations, preferably in a hotel, tourist site, youth camp, or non-profit organization.
- Proven experience in negotiating contracts with a variety of suppliers.
- Previous project management experience.
- Financial literacy and experience in managing budgets.
- Strong organizational and time management skills; strong teamwork as well as independent working skills.
- Native Hungarian speaker with proficiency in English; good communication skills both verbally and in writing in both languages.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and understanding of IT concepts.
- B. A in relevant area – preferred.
